While at lunch do you ever surf the internet and look up random facts? Facts like: what horse won the 1920 Kentucky Derby? How many miles is it from the moon to the earth earth? I do this in particular, to escape from my daily routine. As I was doing this the other day, I stumbled upon some items I found to be extremely interesting. Items I like to call, “Did You Know Facts”. These were facts I was not fully aware of, but I found to be very interesting and made all too much sense upon reading. I am going to share these facts, but before you read each fact, please recite the phrase “Did you know that” before each bullet point.

Did you know that:

  • Our brain processes visuals 60,000X faster than text
  • 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual
  • 50% of the brain is active in visual processing
  • 70% of our sensory receptors are in our eyes
  • 65% of people are visual learners
  • Tweets with images are 94% more likely to be retweeted
  • after two or three days, people retain between 10-20% of written or spoken words and 65% of visual images

I found these facts to be fascinating. These were facts that triggered a light bulb moment and reinforced why graphical imagery is so important when communicating and reinforcing messaging. People retain more from visual images than the written word.

Our bodies are designed to comprehend and retain graphical images faster and longer than the written word. People are more likely to quickly recognize and retain graphical information. It explains why when traveling in a car at 35 miles per hour, you are more easily going to recognize a graphical logo than a bunch of letters on a sign. Now imagine you were in the car. What would your brain more quickly recognize?

Starbucks or Target?

Our bodies are designed to process imagery faster than text. It is no coincidence that major retailers create bold colorful logos to represent their brand. Simplicity through graphical imagery is what our brains were designed to process and comprehend. Understanding the way our brains process information can make a huge difference in the success of marketing campaigns, internal corporate communications and corporate branding. The appropriate use of graphical imagery in corporate communications can contribute to the success of your business enterprise. How are you representing your brand? How much of your messaging are words versus imagery? Are you messaging effectively with a combination of graphical images and words? How are you getting your message out to your potential clients today? These are questions all good managers should be asking themselves. After all, a few minutes of surfing at lunch can lead to a Did You Know moment. By the way, Paul Jones won the 1920 Kentucky Derby and the moon is 238,900 miles from earth.
